Starport Lounge - Future of NE

I have no suggestions for replacement. However, I think T5 may come close in some aspects, but again there is other issues with that edition.
The only system I know of which also got quite coherent design rules are from FASA. Battlete4ch or Renegade Legion. For a Traveller game I would use the latter. However stats and tasks are way different.

However, those rules only let you design starships and tanks (and mechs in BT). The only options we really got is either go with TNE or adopt any of the two MgT or T5 and then use G3 for firearm design.
I'm wondering if Carrara from DAZ might suite you. They have just released an express version of Carrara 7 which while not free looks like it contains both modelling and rendering tools, and is a lot less than a $1000 even the top end of this product line is less than that.

Some of the range may be worth checking out at
Multimedia file viewing and clickable links are available for registered members only!! You need to or !!

On their forum most people reccomend that if you use Express do your models in an external program such as Anim8or and import them.

I did my navy sizes for my United Worlds Commonwealth game by using T4s Imperial Squadrons or Pocket Empires (can't remember which at the moment) to work out how many "squadrons" the world could build. I then ruled that a battle squadron would be around 1,000,000 displacement tons and a cruiser squadron 500,000 displacement tons. From memory for Earth in this campaign it gave a fleet size of around 4,000,000 displacement tons. In this I included what Path of Tears would have described as large combatants, ie 1,000 displacement tons and larger. Smaller vessels were just attached as needed since it would take a lot of these to significantly effect the total military tonnage.

Doing this for the other "powers" assured that the relative strengths of each group in terms of tonnage remained constant.

I read about JRMapes a few days ago, that he had gone into a coma. Today he is gone =0(

I never had much contact with JRMapes, but I was aware of his blog. However, not a frequent visitor.

This forum has been around for about 2 years now.

Oh, welcome to the board =0)
I didn't find creating a reasonable facsimile of the Willys Jeep impossible - so long as one allows the use of restricted seats for the passengers. The vehicle would be a bit larger than historically accurate if you insisted on cramped seats.

Our House Rules - Prefered way to generate characters to Traveller

That should work with a minimum of fuss and also has the advantage of generating more background for the characters to work with. If you are not using the TNE background even less adjustments would need to be made to allow for things like the lower technology lack of an imperial navy etc in the TNE era universe.

GDW house rules - Multiple Hits From Tranq Rounds

I like your idea of basing the number of hits against the targets CON. I remember reading in a Challenge magazine(I think) that the PCs were asked to hunt down some large animals and were given large tranq guns and that there was some mention that shooting people could be "dangerous. I think that most military small arms are designed to shot people sizes targets so the amount of tranq in the tranq rounds would be enough to take down the averaged sized person, about 80 kg body mass and that larger bullets would have more absorption agent,to better penetrate the skin. Civilian weapons are used for hunting animals. Here how about as a rule of thumb that 5mm rounds have half the normal amount of tranq that a military weapon would, 7mm weapons would have the same amount, 9mm weapons 2 times a military weapon and 12mm weapons 3 times the amount a military weapon has.
Skaran your idea that tranq is a poison reminded me, once we substituted poison for the tranq, an assassin got his hands on one of Aubaine's infamous spiked glow fish (level three poisoned spikes) and used his chemistry skill to refine the poison (good roll playing, I allowed the level of poison to be increased to level P-5 due to a n outstanding success roll).
Tranq is fast acting and quick to recover from and I want to keep these features, but I think that multiple hits are going to put more tranq in the body and I think that someone would be knocked out for a longer period(take the square root of the number of tranq rounds that hit times the 1D6 minutes. In the case of our pirate had he lived (he didn't) would be down for 1 to 6 minutes x 3.
Thanks guys I appreciate the help.

FF&S discussions - Turreted vehicles

Perhaps the method used for consturcting tanks in Striker I would work better? The example they gave was a WW2 Panther Tank. Basically the main hull and chassis were designed seperately with the turret having no bottom or top, this being covered by the hole in the chassis being ignored thus effectively moving this part of the hull material to the top of the turret.

I havn't tried this method as a replacement for the turret and main hull being designed as seperate open "topped" hulls.

The Panther in Striker I has a total volume of 31.85m3 for the chassis and 7.5m3 for the turret for a total of 39.3m3 I could not quite match that using FF&S1 but did manage a "Panther" with a volume of 7.5m3 for the turret and 36m3 for the chassis so 43.5m3 total. Compared with the real thing (Multimedia file viewing and clickable links are available for registered members only!! You need to or !!
) mine has a loaded mass of 49.48 tons and is a little slower than the real thing with a top speed of 41.36kph.

As for crew location for the Panther I put half the commander in the turret and the remainder of the crew (plus hald a commander) in the chassis. FF&S basically allocated way to much space for crew. Striker I states seated crew take up 1.5m3 and standing 1m3 in the turret and 1.5m3 in the chassis. I use cramped workstations for tank crews of this period which gives them all 2.5m3.

The third problem is engine power, it is too low for a given size(or the movement formula are too harsh perhaps?)
